Evanston Own It / Evanston Sings

Read more Stephanie Saunders solo'd last Friday night at the Evanston Own It/Evanston Sings gospel extravaganza, which was held at Evanston Township High School (ETHS) and raised money for the Mayor's Youth Summer Employment Program. Listen to Stephanie's amazing voice in the video below. I asked Stephanie where she learned to sing, why the Evanston Sings event is important to her, and why she thinks it should be supported. "What I love about the Evanston Sings Choir Event is that I get to do what I love, with people I love, and give back to our kids at the same time," says Stephanie, who is a teacher in Evanston/Skokie School District 65 and a member of Ebenezer AME -Evanston IL. Stephanie says she's been singing all her life. "I learned to sing from my mom and dad who sang with me and always filled our house with music. I honed my craft singing in my Ebenezer Church choirs, singing in bands professionally around Chicagoland, and I graduated from college with a BA in Music." "People should support this event to let our young people understand that we value them, that they belong to us, and that we care about their futures," Stephanie says. "I believe every seat in the auditorium should be filled. It's a small sacrifice to make that has a big payout! I hope everyone will buy a ticket next year. We spend more money going to see a movie and no-one we know benefits from that!" Evanston Own It comprises a group of black churches in Evanston that came together in June 1015 to commit to reducing youth violence in Evanston. Churches include: Christ Temple Church Evanston IL, Ebenezer AME Church, Faith Temple Evanston, First Church of God Christian Life Center, Fisher Memorial AME Zion Church, Friendship Baptist Church of Evanston, Mount Pisgah Ministry, New Hope CME Church, Sherman United Methodist Church, and Springfield Missionary Baptist Church, Evanston. Evanston Sings, now in its third year, was created by Pastor Zollie Webb. For more information about Evanston Own It, contact Pastor Clifford Wilson at 847-328-6808.
